Spelling Contest for South Asian Children on May 5

 

LOS ANGELES (CA) – A spelling and vocabulary contest will be held for South Asian children on May 5 (Saturday) at Jain Center of South California, 8072 Commonwealth Avenue, Buena Park under the auspices of North South Foundation. The daylong competition will start at 10 am and finish at 4 pm, according to a press release issued by the University of Karachi Alumni Association.

The spelling contest is open to children of South Asian origin born after August 31, 1989 or later while the vocabulary contest to children born after August 31, 1985 or later. Younger children can participate on equal basis in either competition. The competition is especially designed to focus on the PSAT and SAT exams and help children prepare for them.

Adnan Zubair from Pakistan became first in last year’s competition, who also won the National Spelling Bee and Brain Bee. The winners of this year’s competition will be invited to the National Championship Finals in Washington D.C. on September 1, 2001. The winners of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the National Finals will be awarded scholarships worth $2000, $1000 and $600 respectively.

The registration fee for the competition is $15.
